Lemnos Climate

The climate on the Island is also a curiosity. Lemnos climate is relatively the same as on the European and the Middle East continent. Most of the time the climate is similar to the North one. Hot and dry in Summer (continental climate). Rather cold and humid in Winter.2012-lemnos-island-ileThere are some pictures of the Island under snow, but, according to the inhabitants, very special circumstances are needed to get a snowy landscape. The Island of Lemnos fills up with water in Winter and stores it in the mountains to ensure a good water supplying in Summer. Natural lakes and reservoirs enable to make farming grow (mainly vineyard) during difficult Summer months. In Winter it’s about 10 days of frost in the center of the Island. Maximum precipitation rate in December is about 140 mm.2011-lemnos-island-ileReally mild and agreable from Spring to Autumn. Hot but not sultry, you always have the possibility to refresh yourself under the winds in the East or near the sea. During the month of July we were there, there was only one rainy day…but not everywhere on the Island and not all day long.2030-lemnos-island-ile2 days of precipitation in August as in June… The temperature rarely exceeds 30°C in Summer and the thermal amplitude at that time of the year is about 10°C. So you can really have a sweet rest at night.

Some oddness: the climate follows the features of the geology. During our stay, it happened to us to be wet once on the top of a mountain whereas on the coast the ground was completely dry and it was sunny, and in the East of the Island, there was a “big thunderstorm”.  The relief of the Island explains very marked microclimate that you can notice thanks to the vegetation.

Winds are very stable. They are mainly from the North / North-East all along the year. Strong in the North-East of the Island (no relief), almost nonexistent in the West of the Island. The winds go through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus straits and arrive at the top of the Island but they are hunted by the mountains, on the heights, when they go towards the South and the West.
