Samaria Gorge ☼

Anoula’s travel notebook.

Samaria is the only gorge which is watched and so it is the only one which is not free. The entrance fee is about 5 euros. It is a 6 to 7 hours walk down the gorge which is 16km long. Be careful, the Samaria Gorge is closed from the end of October to the beginning of May but also during raining days.

The gorge is crowded, too much to me, I often found myself walking one by one, and I did it in October, so I can’t imagine in the middle of July. But even though, I don’t regret, I must admit it is spectacular to see. It is very deep and narrow, the walls of the gorge can reach 300m high and sometimes only 2,5m wide. Walking through the gorge is not really difficult. At the end of the gorge, you will arrive at Agia Roumeli from where you can only take a boat to go back to your starting point or to walk up back the gorge, but it will take much longer than 6-7 hours walk !
