Folklore

The folklore on the Island of Lemnos is very rich, and above all, the folklore is very important for the population. We attended a yearly event which is very popular for local people, this event relates the life on the Island and its inhabitants through folk dances and clothes from the Island. Even without understanding Greek, it was easy to feel the different influences to which the Island was subjected through the centuries, Continental Greek, Muslim, Turkish… The folklore was a way for a long time (Muslim Turkish occupation) to keep track of their origins and to resist culturally speaking. Yet, the mixing took place and the traces are still apparent. Keep in mind the toughness of life because of the occupation on the Island and the difficulty that these people, farmers rather than seamen, had to know.
